Back to School Fundraisers to Stay Green and Make Some Too!

Back to school can also mean back to writing a big check for all those fundraisers…like the wrapping paper sales, cookie dough or those attraction books that drive me crazy and most parents too regardless of how green they might be!

Here’s some good, green school money raising ideas for a change.

Terracycle offers several ways for school to raise funds through it’s various Brigades like snack wrappers, drink pouches, and the recently launched Keyboard and Mouse Brigade.Terracycle Brigade Box

  • By collecting the wrappers from brands like Frito-Lay, Capri Sun, Nabisco, Kraft Cheese, and GoGo squeeZ, schools can send in trash for free, and earn two cents for every item of trash received.   TerraCycle then takes these wrappers and turns them into lunchboxes, notebooks, pencil cases, binders, folders, and backpacks.
  • The new Logitech’s Keyboard and Mouse Brigade accepts and recycles broken, outdated, or extra keyboards and mice into new computer products or yet-to-be-determined plastics items including trashcans, park benches, and bike racks.  This is the first collection program for computer peripherals that provides both an incentive for collecting and free shipping from any location.

Here are a few other ideas to consider as well:

  • Greenraising – Offering eco-friendly gifts, organic candies and yes even wrapping paper, your school can earn between 30-40% on items sold via traditional catalog sales or website sales.
  • GoodSearch – Search the web here and GoodSearch will donate to your school, cause or charity for every search or purchase.
  • Recycling Fundraiser – Will also pay for a variety of items like electronics as well as jewelry and ink toners and cartridges.

Though our school’s fundraisers are set for the year, I’m still taking this to my PTA to at least plant the seed for future consideration.  What does your school do?  Any other green fund raising ideas out there?
