Ding Dong! Avon Calling – Hello Green Tomorrow!

May 23, 2010

“Ding Dong!  Avon Calling”. Though many jokes may have been made around this iconic ad campaign phrase, Avon isn’t joking around these days with their firm commitment to the environment.  I recently had the chance to meet the company’s Director of Corporate Responsibility who shared  Avon’s initiatives surrounding sustainability and the environment.  Since implementing targets and goals to reduce in 2004, Avon has achieved the following results to date:

  • Water consumption per unit decreased by 24%
  • Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions per unit decreased by 31%
  • Energy consumption per unit decreased by 30%

With that Avon has launched HelloGreenTomorrow and with every dollar donation regardless of whether you buy product or not, a tree is planted to help restore South America’s Atlantic rain forest where only 7% of the forest remains.   This campaign is designed to utilize the voice of the 6 million plus Sales Representatives and empower a global  environmental movement to nurture nature by leveraging this ability to educate and engage women around the world.  Avon kicked off the campaign with a one million dollar contribution to plant a million trees and in partnership with The Nature Conservancy, trees will be appropriately planted and managed.

In addition to this commitment to sustainability, the company announced the Avon Paper Promise, a comprehensive policy outlining efforts and goals for promoting sustainable forest use, protecting forests, and reducing demands on forests.  This is where Avon believes they can have the biggest impact right now – reduction of paper use and promotion of sustainable forestry efforts.

As a result of all this work, Avon ranked #25 on Newsweek magazine’s first “green” list of the 500 largest US-based corporations in 2009. On June 3rd, Avon will announce the first milestone in this fund raising effort, so here’s your chance to open the door, make a quick donation and say “Hello Green Tomorrow”.

And when you make a donation, you will receive an email with a thank you certificate /educational flyer with daily green action tips.
