A Front Yard Garden?

March 12, 2010

When we moved into our house a few years ago, we were told that previous owners had tomato plants and cucumbers growing in the front yard as there is some serious direct sunlight in the afternoon.  No worries, that will never happen with us, I assured my new neighbor.

Last spring we decided to participate in a community garden for the first time ever and thought this would be a great way to learn and ease into  the gardening experience.  Since our backyard only gets sun in just one spot, I certainly wasn’t going to do anything in the front yard like those owners of yesteryear.

Now we are thinking of a summer garden again and I’m having second thoughts.  We  had a great time tending to our garden (pesticide free) and watching the progress of our plants.  We had success with our eggplants, green peppers, yellow squash and even a sugar baby watermelon and cantaloupe.  I was truly amazed at the deep satisfaction of growing these fruits and vegetables and then creating a fresh home grown dish.  My (silly) boys were excited to see the growth on every visit and look forward to more gardening fun this year.

So while we enjoyed our community garden experience, we’ve decided that it would be easier to have the garden at home so we can tend to it daily.  And now we’re back to planning on where to place everything.

Hopefully my neighbors will forgive us!  I’ll keep you posted.

I can see why you would want to garden at home. Although I love the aspect of chatting all day with my fellow gardeners, the downside is would have to force myself to get in the car to tend the garden. I am glad your boys are involved. You got to start them young. My boys are older and think gardening is just plain hard work.

Look forward to hearing about your gardening adventures! Welcome to the Green Mom Carnival.

Anna,
Yes – getting to the church community garden was more difficult than I thought. While we have planted carrots and green beans in our backyard this time…eggplant and squash are going in the front! Thanks for visiting and look forward to being a part of your Green Mom Carnival.

Hi Jeanne,

Thanks for this great submission! I gather that it was something in your neighbor’s tone that implied, “Can you believe it?..They planted a front yard garden?!” I hope in a few years people say, “Can you believe it? They don’t have rainbarrels! They use chemical fertilizers! Can you believe it?” Funny what we look askance at…

You are so right! We are definitely in the midst of a transition and maybe someday the front yard eggplants will be the envy of the neighborhood! Thanks for the comment Lynn.

Obviously, I can’t speak for your neighbours, but front yard gardens make me smile. I’d rather see people use the best growing spots for food, instead of more lawns!

Amber, Actually my neighbors are very sweet so hoping once I deliver a little homemade eggplant parm, they will warm up to the idea even more! Thanks for visiting.

Give them some of your produce and they won’t care hehe.

I would love to have gardens everywhere! Yet I can’t seem to grow anything in my small backyard garden lol.
