So many great ideas out there in terms of being creative with items and here is one that is easy and fun. Turning an old t-shirt or event t-shirt you’ve worn just one time into a functional reusable tote bag. I first came across this last summer when a resourceful North Carolina Girl Scout contacted me about her easy instructions.
Word is spreading and Kelly, another Girl Scout in New Jersey going for her Gold Award, is promoting this project too with great decorating tips. Having worked at a supermarket she is keenly aware of the number of bags used by shoppers so she is truly motivated to help encourage the use of reusable bags.
Here are the quick instructions from her site, TShirtTote.org.
What’s needed: T-shirt, scissors, sewing machine. Hand sewing is also an option.
Step 1: Turn t-shirt inside out
Step 2: Using a sewing machine, sew the bottom of the t-shirt closed.
Step 3: Cut of the sleeves of the t-shirt.
Step 4: Cut out the neck, lining it up with the bottoms of the sleeves.
Step 5: Turn the t-shirt tote right side out. Voila, you are done!
With some glitter glue and foam stickers, I think this could be great for a kid’s party or classroom project too while teaching a valuable lesson. What are your thoughts and ideas?

Great idea – lots of shirts I can put to good use. Might try trimming with some ribbon too. Thanks.
Love it! Send a pic and I’ll post. Thanks for visiting.
